Thanks Paul. I do use the Bluetooth Photo Sharing app, but it ONLY works between another iPhone, not to ANY mobile phone, so although it's useful in part, it still kinda sucks that I can't share a photo to my daughter's Nokia or my Son's Sony Ericcson phone. I got a bit excited by the sound of that PhotoToMac app you mentioned, but when I had a look I discovered that it only works on wifi, not Bluetooth. There are LOTS of times I want to send a photo to a device that I am not in a wifi zone, or not in the same subnet of the same network.

Like I said, it sucks that Apple prevents basic stuff that all other phones do without an issue. For a company that bangs on about the importance of standards and has built major chunks of their operating system on the foundation of free and open source software, Apple is incredibly hypocritical about its own adherence to technology standards.

I'm still annoyed at Apple, but thanks for trying! ;-)

G'day mate - love my iPhone - but like you have written, have experienced similar issues re bluetooth.( I had a Nokia N95 too.) As always, there are work arounds. Re the photo transferring - I am using these apps - PhotoToMac (by Galarina) and Bluetooth Photo Share (nathanpeterson.com). Both work well. As they as - there's an app for that!

Chris,
check out syncdocs from sourceforge. Some of the apps on my iPhone have been built to use it. Allows for config free backup and upload to desktop. Ask the developers of your apps to add that funtionality. It works really well

I agree, but I have never wanted a iPhone on the basis that everyone else has one!

I am waiting on more devices that run on Google Android. It is still early days for the Google OS but companies like Samsung, Motorola, Acer, Toshiba and even Sony are starting to develop their next generation phones around it so it will only get better from here.

Even if you don't like the mods that the phone manufacturer has made to the vanilla Android, or the branding the mobile carriers have plastered all over the phone, you can just download an update someone from the community has developed, or restore the vanilla version. It is already starting to happen and with Android 2.0 on it's way, things are only gonna get better!

Providing the hardware in the phone itself is decent, then the OS can be developed by almost anyone.

I am at the point now where I need a phone, but I think I am going to hold out for a few months to see what the mobile makers do first. The Samsung Galaxy is out now, which is the first non HTC version of Android but it is still too new I think.

Hi Jodi,

Don't get me wrong, I like the iPhone (sometimes a lot, sometimes less) but it's a fine piece of technology. I just wish it wasn't limited in the Bluetooth area. There are workarounds for it, and I guess I can cope with using wifi, email or MMS to solve the problem, I just don't think I should have to.

If you get a good deal on the phone, and you're aware of the limitations of it, I'd probably do it. If you have more time to serve on your contract, and you're not passionately unhappy with your current phone, I'd probably hang off until your contract is up, or you see what Apple does for the next release, or you find out what Android is up to by the end of the year.

So many choices! :-)

Yes I am glad to have the Bluetooth File Transfer problem confirmed. I enjoyed a story recently about Apple not allowing Google's Latitude App. Nice to see the 'big boys' having to fight too.

Never knew you were a geocacher!?

A timely post for me Chris, I am in HK (unlocked and free to choose carrier iphone country) and just the other day wanted to share some files with my son on an LG KP500 - a cheap version of iphone without the wifi capability and we couldn't do it and I was a bit surprised - came back to check the "Missing Manual" - only blue tooth for car and one other function mentioned, tried the internet to find what I needed to turn on with no success - but now I know why. I just can't do it - I agree with you that Apple may have made a mistake on this one - new twitter tag perhaps? #unlockbluetoothoniphone! Maybe then we will see how Apple responds!
